SUMMARY

The role of the Scientist I is to support the Biomarker Services team based in Manchester, UK on a daily basis and to ensure that the laboratory environment is operating effectively and safely in accordance with instruction provided by the Biomarker Services Operations Manager, Laboratory Supervisor, Project Manager or Responsible Scientist. The role will involve performing microarray

processing, qPCR, fragment analysis, DNA sequencing and nucleic acid extractions in support of client biomarker discovery and validation studies as well as supporting client clinic genomics programs.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Sample Processing

  • To contribute in providing a profitable routine analytical and applications service in line with the regulatory, quality and scientific expectations of Hologic Ltd.

  • To perform downstream molecular genetic services (Affymetrix & Illumina microarrays,qPCR, Luminex and sequencing), extraction services and all related QC procedures as directed by the Biomarker Services Operations Manager, Laboratory Supervisor, Project Manager or Responsible Scientist in accordance with written procedures.

  • To ensure minimum stock levels of all reagents and consumables are maintained according to forecasts provided by the Project Manager.

Quality

  • To carry out all activities in accordance with the relevant quality standards, e.g. ISO17025,GCP or CLIA.

  • To write and review SOPs / Technical documents as required.

  • To liaise with the Quality Department and be familiar with the Quality Manual to ensure correct documentation and SOPs are in place and report non-conformances to ensure continual improvement. To comply with all health and safety and COSHH systems.

Process Improvement

  • To actively participate in the Biomarker Services ongoing process improvement program.

  • To maintain an up-to-date scientific knowledge in line with company strategy.

  • To play and active role in the development of existing and additional services within the

  • Biomarker Services team, as instructed by the Biomarker Services Operations Manager.

Communication

  • To communicate effectively, professionally, and promptly so that all relevant information is forwarded to the appropriate personnel on a regular and timely basis (including Senior Management, Biomarker Services Team members and Clients).

  • To participate in internal meetings, visits, and audits as and when appropriate and communicate any information back to the appropriate personnel.

Troubleshooting

  • To effectively liaise internally with appropriate personnel and externally with Clients, Tech Support and Engineering Teams to provide technical support, resolve technical issues and carry out all associated troubleshooting activities as directed by the Biomarker Services Operations Manager, Laboratory Supervisor or Project Manager.

Client-Facing

  • Be available to travel to meet with customers to discuss pre-, in-progress, and post-project matters. To participate in client meetings, visits, and audits as and when appropriate and communicate any information back to the project team.

Other

  • To undertake any other task that may be reasonably asked by the management which is consistent with the skill base or previous employment history of the employee.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of a degree in a Science related subject or experience of working in a science-related environment for 2 years.
